Abstract: The meaning of the phrase “zu sheng da ding” in the chapter Discussion on the Interrelationship Between Life and Nature (Shengqi Tongtian Lun) in Huangdi’s Internal Classic (Huangdi Neijing) has aroused much controversy among generations of TCM physicians since Wang Bing republished Plain Questions (Suwen) in Huangdi’s Internal Classic over a thousand years ago. This paper re-investigates the hidden meanings of the characters da (大) and ding (丁) respectively while questioning the previous interpretation of “da ding” as furuncle. It finally concludes that the “da ding” is an ancient term for tumour. Based on this, a possible interpretation of zu (足) and a supplementary interpretation of “shou ru chi xu” (受如持虚) are also suggested,i.e. “be enough to” and “suffer excess with deficiency” respectively.

Key words: da ding, zu sheng da ding, tumour
