Influences of moxibustion on inflammatory factors and synoviocytes in rats with rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Objective To discuss the mechanism of moxibustion in treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods Wistar rats (n=40) were randomly divided into normal group, model group, moxibustion group, acupuncture group and infrared group (each n=8). The degree of plantar swelling was observed and content of serum IL-1 and IL-2, and protein expressions of Bcl-2 and Caspase-3 in knee synomium were detected in rats of all groups. Results In model group, plantar and ankle inflammatory swelling was observed, plantar circumference was significantly longer compared with normal group, IL-1 content increased, IL-2 decreased, and expressions of Bcl-2 and Caspase-3 increased (P<0.05). After treatment, plantar circumference was shorter, IL-1 content decreased, IL-2 increased, expression of Bcl-2 decreased (P<0.05), and expression of Caspase-3 increased (P<0.05) in moxibustion group, acupuncture group and infrared group. Conclusion Moxibustion on Shenshu (BL23) can inhibit secondary plantar swelling and release of IL-1, increase IL-2 content, improve the expression of Caspase-3 and decrease expression of Bcl-2 in knee synomium in RA rats.
