Influence of electroacupuncture-assisted intervention on ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome during in vitro fertilization-embryo transplantation

Abstract: Objective To observe the influences of electroacupuncture-assisted intervention on incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and pregnancy outcome during in vitro fertilization-embryo transplantation (IVF-ET). Methods The patients were randomly divided into observation group and control group. The observation group was treated with electroacupuncture from the day of injecting gonadotrophin (Gn) to the day of embryo transplantation (ET). The levels of serum estradiol (E2), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and angiotensin-II (AT-II) were detected at the day of hCG injection, ovum pick-up (OPU) day and ET day. The incidence of OHSS and clinical outcomes were compared between 2 groups. Results The level of E2 was significantly lower in observation group than that in control group at OPU day and ET day (P<0.05). The levels of VEGF and IL-6 were significantly lower in observation group than those in control group at hCG day, OPU day and ET day (P<0.05). The difference in level of AT-II had no statistical significance between 2 groups (P>0.05). The incidence of OHSS was significantly lower in observation group than that in control group (P<0.05), and high-quality embryo rate and clinical pregnancy rate had no significant difference between 2 groups (P>0.05). Conclusion Electroacupuncture can reduce significantly the incidence of OHSS but will not reduce high-quality embryo rate and clinical pregnancy rate during IVF-ET, which may be related to the decrease of abnormally elevated vascular permeability.
