Research on dynamic changes of five chemical components of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. at different growth stages using HPLC*

Abstract: Objective To measure the dynamic changes of five chemical components of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. at different growth stages, and to determine the optimal harvesting time. Methods The Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. was extracted from 20 % dimethyl sulfoxide-methanol solution. The method of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was used, with the 0.3% mobile phase of formic acid-methanol -0.3% formic acid on a gradient elution, to detect the Caffeic acid, Rosemary acid, Diosmin, Linarin and Pulegone in different growth periods of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. at 290 nm wave length at the same time. Results With these chromatographic parameters, the linear relationship, degree of separation, precision, stability, repeatability and recovery rate of the five components were all qualified. The contents of Linarin and Diosmin were the highest, with Pulegone second to it while the Caffeic acid and Rosemary acid’s contents were lower at different growth periods. And these five chemical components in Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. varied at different growth periods. But all of them were higher in pre-flowering period and flowering period. Conclusion According to the data, we can determine the flowering period was the optimal harvesting time for Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. initially. The pattern of dynamic changes of the chemical components of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. could provide the basic data for the Good Agriculture Practice (GAP) of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam.
