Abstract: Objective To describe the distribution of patterns at acute attack stage, chronic persistent stage and remission stage of bronchial asthma. Methods Bronchial asthma patients’ data from 17 Class-A Top-Level TCM hospitals were collected. The database was established using SPSS18.0 for frequency description and chi-square test. Results Of 2 500 questionnaires given out, 2 481 were returned with 2 428 valid ones identified. Patterns of bronchial asthma during the acute attack stage were mainly excess patterns, including patterns of exogenous cold and internal fluid-retention, turbid phlegm obstructing the lung, phlegm-heat obstructing the lung, wind-phlegm retention in the lung, and blood stasis. Patterns during the chronic persistent stage were mostly complex patterns of deficiency and excess. Patterns at the remission stage were mainly deficiency patterns, including patterns of lung qi deficiency, deficiency of lung and spleen, deficiency of kidney and lung, deficiency of lung-kidney qi and Yin, deficiency of kidney and lung Yang. Conclusion The rules of different pattern distribution at different stages of bronchial asthma provide the basis for the prevention and cure.
