Post-effects of electro-acupuncture intervention on the skin temperature of the acupoints areas of the rats with myocardial ischemia*

Abstract: Objective To observe the skin temperature at the area of acupoints —“Neiguan” (PC 6), “Ximen” (PC 4) and “Tianquan” (PC 2) before and after electro-acupuncturing at low and high frequency, so as to explore the post-effects of acupuncturing on the rats with myocardial ischemia. Methods Myocardial ischemia model was induced by coronary artery occlusion. Wistar female rats were divided randomly into blank group, sham group, model group, low-, and high- frequency of electro-acupuncture (low-frequency, high-frequency) groups(each n=10), with acupuncturing on the rats in low and high frequency group once daily . The infrared thermograms were recorded at immediately (0 min), 30 min and 60 min after needle withdrawl. Then the data were measured and analyzed. Results The skin temperature of all three acupoint areas of rat model increased; after acupuncturing, the skin temperature of the three acupoint areas decreased, with that of PC 2 and PC 4 near to the control group. The skin temperatures of bilateral PC 6, bilateral PC 4, left PC 2 at immediately after needle withdrawl in low-frequency group were nearer to that of control group; at 30 min, skin temperatures of bilateral PC 6 and PC 4 in high-frequency group were nearer to that of control group; at 60 min, the skin temperatures of bilateral PC 6, right PC 4 and right PC 2 were nearer to that of the control group. Conclusion The skin temperatures of acupoints at the Pericardium Meridian decreased after low or high frequency acupuncture treatment; low frequency electro-acupuncture evoked rapid effects and short duration, by contrast, high frequency electro-acupuncture was found slow onset and long duration.
