Detection of the content of heavy metal elements in tortoise shells and tortoise shell glue by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry*

Abstract: Objective To detect the content of heavy metals in medical materials of Guijia (Tortoise Carapace and Plastron, Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) and Guijiajiao (Tortoise Shell Glue, Testudinis Carapacis et Plastri Colla), and investigate and study the heavy metal pollution of medical materials of Guijia and Guijiajiao. Methods In this study, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was applied to detect the content of 6 heavy metals [chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), cadmiu (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb) and copper (Cu)] in multiple batches of Guijia and Guijiajiao on sale in the market and their adulterants. Results The results showed that heavy metals in Guijia and Guijiajiao were identified in the following descending order: Cu (21.96 μg/g), Cr (1.70 μg/g), Pb (1.28 μg/g), As (0.29 μg/g), Hg (0.15 μg/g), Cd (0.09 μg/g). Among them, the content of Cr and Pb exceeded national limit standard significantly. Conclusion There are certain patterns in the distribution of heavy metals in medical materials of Guijia and Guijiajiao. Heavy metals were significantly less in Guijiajiao than that in Guijia. This study can be a reference for controlling and reviewing the quality of Guijia and Guijiajiao.
