Abstract: As the oldest known Japanese medical classic, Geshi Fang (Ge’s Fromulas) in Ishinpo, is an important circulating version of Ge Hong’s medical prescriptions. At present, the research of this book mainly focuses on literature collection, and there was no in-depth discussion on the compiling date. This paper comprehensively analyzed the book from three aspects of content, taboo words, and terms, and compared it with the handed down medical literature. It was noted that the text of Geshi Fang contains supplementary content of Tao Hongjing. The full text did not avoid the taboo words of Sui and Tang dynasties. The qnantifiers“Guo”, ”Mei” and “Wu” were popular in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and in the handed down version, these qnantifiers were changed into commonly used units in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. According to the above research, the preliminary conclusion was reached. Geshi Fang in Ishinpo is consistent with Buque Zhouhou Baiyi Fang (One Hundred Supplementary Formulas for Emergencies) written by Tao Hongjing. Thus, the book was probably completed between South Liang Dynasty and Sui Dynasties.
