Abstract: Pattern is a unique way to identify disease in traditional Chinese medicine. As the basis and essence of TCM theory, it plays a key role in connecting principles, strategies, formulas and medicinal substances of TCM. Clinically, the etiology, pathogenesis, location, status and other characteristics of disease are discovered through pattern differentiation, which serves as a basis for treatment. Based on the principle of suiting the prescription to the pattern to achieve its efficacy, this paper analyzes the interconnection between patterns, prescriptions and Chinese medicinal substances to construct the Chinese Medicinal Substance Attribute and Pattern Differentiation Correlation Model (CMSA-PD CM). The relationship between the properties, flavors and efficacy of medicinal substances, compatibility of medicinal substances and pattern differentiation is explored with the model. Finally, the model is applied to the analysis of the prescription for hidrosis pattern caused by lung-defence insecurity to illustrate its clinical relevance. It will provide reference for analyzing the thinking process behind pattern differentiation and for rational clinical prescription.
