Effects of Jiangtang Tongluo Decoction II and mecobalamin tablets on serum IL-1β,sVCAM-1 and HCY levels in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy*

Abstract: Objective To observe the clinical efficacy and influence of Jiangtang Tongluo (Anti-diabetic Vessel-dredging) Decoction II and mecobalamin tablets on serum IL-1β,sVCAM-1 and HCY levels in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.Methods 96 cases of diabetic peripheral neuropathy diagnosed as yin deficiency with blood stasis pattern in Huangjiahu Infirmary of Hubei University of Chinese Medicine were randomly divided into a control group (n=48) and an observation group (n=48). Both groups received mecobalamin tablets while the patients in the observation group were given Jiangtang Tongluo Decoction II for 4 consecutive weeks (2 weeks as one treatment course). Glucolipid metabolism and nerve conduction velocity were measured for efficacy evaluation, the levels of serum IL-1β,sVCAM-1 and HCY being monitored.Results Effective rate was 91.7% in the observation group, which was higher than that (77.1%) of the control group (P<0.05). The improvement of glucolipid metabolism in patients of the observation group were better than those of the control group, as the levels of FPG, HbA1c, TC ,TG and LDL-C were lower than those of the control group with the higher level of HDL-C(P<0.05), the nerve conduction velocity of median nerve and peroneal nerve was significantly increased(P<0.05), and the levels of serum IL-1β,sVCAM-1 and HCY for patients in the observation group were lower than those of the control group after treatment(P<0.05).Conclusion This formula seems to improve the glycemic metabolism and to increase the rate of nerve conduction. Its mechanism might be related to decreasing the levels of serum IL-1β,sVCAM-1 and HCY to reduce the damage to the endothelial cells.
