    The nature of noumenon image which is one of presentation forms of mental image, is original Qi (Taixu) regarded as the arche of all things. Flowing and convertion of noumenon image is exactly the movement and qi transformation of Taixu. The application of noumenon image in TCM is focused on explanation of the physiological function of viscera and pathological changes,as well as guidance of diagnosis and treatment.

    Correlation between incidence of Japanese encephalitis and meteorological factors and establishment of forecast model based on theory of five circuits and six qi

    Objective To study the correlation between high incidence of Japanese encephalitis and meteorological factors in the same year and three years ago based on TCM theory of five circuits and six qi, and establish a medical meteorological forecast model of BP artificial neural network. Methods The data of the monthly incidence of Japanese encephalitis and meteorological factors were collected from 1970 to 2004 (altogether 35 years) in Beijing, from which the period of high incidence of Japanese encephalitis was extracted. Then the forecast model of Japanese encephalitis was established by applying BP artificial neural network analysis to meteorological factors recorded in the same year, one year ago, two years ago and three years ago. Results Fourth qi was the peak period of outbreak of Japanese encephalitis (P<0.01). All forecast models based on recorded meteorological factors yearly were successfully established with forecast accuracy higher than 80%. Additionally, the most important meteorological factors calculated were average wind speed in first qi in the same year, average relative humidity in third qi in the one year ago, average wind speed in first qi in the two years ago, and average wind speed in second qi in the three years ago. Conclusion The high incidence of Japanese encephalitis in Beijing is related to meteorological factors in the year and the three years ago. Furthermore, the forecast model established based on the meteorological factors of the three years ago is evaluated as the best one.

    Correlation between tumor inflammatory microenvironment and “cancerous toxin” pathogenesis

    The tumor inflammatory microenvironment is a key component of tumor microenvironment. The transformation of controlled inflammation into uncontrolled inflammation occurring frequently in the process of carcinogenesis, eventually Results in the suitable microenvironment for promoting the proliferation, invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis and immune escape of tumor cells. Prefessor Zhou Zhong-ying, awarded “National Chinese Medical Science Master”, put forward the theory of cancerous toxin pathogenesis based on his long-term clinical experience, in which “cancerous toxin ”is the key factor in carcinogenesis and cancer growth. TCM pathological factors referred as cancerous toxin, phlegm turbidity, blood stasis, damp turbidity and toxic heat, lead to tumors by intermingling, transformation and interaction as cause-and-effect. The formation and pathogenesis of cancerous toxin are similar to the process of inflammation transformation into tumor in tumor inflammatory microenvironment. Cancerous toxin intermingled with the other pathological factors mentioned above have close correlation with, we believe, tumor cells interacting with immune cells and cytokines in tumor inflammatory microenvironment. Under the totally different viewpoints of Chinese and western medicine, the biological bases of theory of cancerous toxin pathogenesis on tumor formation and growth will be expected to elucidate, so as to provide a scientific basis for the theory applied to tumor.

    Similarity, difference and correlation between syndrome elements and syndrome essential factors

    Syndrome elements and syndrome essential factors, which are both hot topics in TCM theory research in recent years, are originated from same theory and same standard with totally different definitions which are presented in the aspects of basic concept, combining disease and prescription with syndrome; that is called “triple forks from one source(Yi Yuan San Qi)” . Traditional Chinese medicine is a relative conservative science; it is rather difficult to germinate new theories and viewpoints. Once a new theory is put forward, it will undoubtedly bring about differentiation, interaction, contending and integration of TCM science. It is necessary to clarify the similarity, difference and correlation between syndrome elements and syndrome essential factors, which will be the key to the development of TCM diagnostic.

    Reports on combination of Sargassum and Glycyrrhiza uralensis in TCM eighteen incompatible medicaments based on clinical literatures

    Objective To discuss the clinical safety of combination of Sargassum (Haizao) and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. (Gancao), which were regarded as a pair of incompatible herbs in TCM eighteen incompatible medicaments (Shi Ba Fan) . Methods After searching the clinical literature of combination of Haizao and Gancao in CNKI, VIP, CMCC, CBM, Wanfang data and PubMed, Cochrane Library, adverse events induced were classified and analyzed. Results Altogether 1 002 articles included, 12% (n=123) drew the Conclusion that Haizao undoubtedly combined with Gancao in the same decoction to obtain better effects, while 4%(n=40) even confirmed that the combination was compatible and safe. Conclusion A few physicians treated some special diseases, such as cystic hyperplasia, with combination of Haizao and Gancao, however, the safety was uncertain for few studies of advent events and related fundamental of theory.

    Visualized study on “large intestine disease causing pulmonary disease”based on infrared thermal imaging technology

    Objective To provide new biophysical evidences to support TCM theory of exterior and interior relationship between lung and large intestine by carrying out epidemiological investigations,in which the energy distribution of patients' and healthy persons' internal organs were compared. Methods The relative temperatures of large intestine, small intestine, lung, liver, stomach and kidney of healthy persons(normal group) and ulceative colitis (UC) patients with syndrome of dampness-heat in large intestine (UC patient group) were tested by medical infrared thermal imager and thermal automatic analysis system. Results 26 of 38 UC patients suffered pulmonary symptoms, of which the ratio of cough was the highest (29%). In UC patient group, the relative temperature of lung was highest, followed by those of descending colon and ascending colon. Compared with normal group, the relative temperatures of lung, descending colon and ascending colon in UC patient group were all higher significantly (P<0.01). Conclusion Pulmonary diseases caused by large intestine diseases are common on clinic, which is proved by infrared thermal imaging technology. Relative specificity existed in energy distribution of lung and large intestine, which supports the theory of “exterior and interior relationship between lung and large intestine”, is expected to guide “treating disease before it happens” and “preventing disease from exacerbating” .

    Effect of method of tonifying kidney and benefiting marrow on hemopoietic growth factors in mice exposed to 60Co-γ rays

    Objective To explore the mechanism of Yisui Shengxue granule formulated by TCM method of tonifying kidney and benefiting marrow on promoting hemopoietic growth factors in bone marrows. Methods Altogether 78 male Kunming mice were randomly divided into six groups(n=13 each): blank group, model group, positive drug group, low dose, middle dose and high dose Yisui Shengxue granule group(low-dose group, mid-dose group and high-dose group). Except for blank group, mice in other five groups were whole-body exposed to 60Co-γ ray once to establish the acute marrow injury model. Low-dose group, mid-dose group and high dose group were administrated intragastrically 3, 6, 12 g/kg Yisui Shengxue granule, while positive drug group was hypodermically injected recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor for 14 consecutive days. Stem cell factor (SCF), interleukin-3 (IL-3), granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) from blood serum and marrow liquid supernatant were detected by radioimmunoassay. Results Compared with model group, the contents of GM-CSF in blood, IL-3 in bone marrow increased significantly in all Chinese medicinal groups (P<0.05); furthermore, the contents of SCF increased in high-dose group and in low dose group (P<0.05). Conclusion Method of Tonifying kidney and benefiting marrow improved the contents of GM-CSF, IL-3 and SCF of mice with acute marrow injure induced by exposure to 60Co-γ rays, leading to promoting the proliferation of myeloid hematopoietic cells.

    Objective To explore the spasmolysis and analgesia effects of Shaoyao Gancao decoction at different proportions on spastic paralysis rats. Methods The spasmo-rat model was made by using thread approach to occlude middle cerebral artery. Compared with bacolfen (bacolfen group), altogether five Shaoyao Gancao decoction groups were designed at five different proportions of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (Shaoyao)and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.(Gancao) with 1∶1(TCM 1 group),1.5∶1(TCM 2 group),3∶1(TCM 3 group),7∶1(TCM 4 group) and 24∶0(TCM 5 group). After 3 weeks, neurological symptom score, muscular tone and pain threshold were measured. Results All the five TCM groups relieved spasm and pain, but different proportions showed different effects on neurological symptom score, muscular tone and pain threshold . The proportion of 1∶1 reduced neurological symptom score significantly compared with the other groups, while the proportion of 3∶1 decreased muscular tension and proportion of 7∶1 increased pain threshold dramatically. Conclusion Shaoyao Gancao decoction relieved spasm and pain induced by central muscular hypertonia at the best proportion 3∶1 at the comprehensive evaluation.

    Preventive and therapeutic effects of Fuzheng Tixie Souluo formula on pulmonary interstitial fibrosis rats

    Objective To explore the preventive and therapeutic effects of Fuzheng Tixie Souluo formula, which was formulated by TCM theory of collateral disease , on rat model with pulmonary interstitial fibrosis induced by bleomycin at different time points. Methods SD rats were divided into sham-operation group, model group, hydrocortisone group and Fuzheng Tixie Souluo formula group (Chinese medicine group) randomly. Rats were infused bleomycin through tracheal intubation to establish pulmonary fibrosis model except those in sham-operation group which were administered intragestrically the same volume of normal saline. From 24 h after modeling, sham-operation group and model group were given saline, hydrocortisone group and Chinese medicine group were given corresponding drugs. Rats were sacrificed at 7, 14, 28, 45 d respectively,with the lung tissues were collected. Pathological changes of the lungs were examined by HE and Masson staining, content of transformation growth factor-β1(TGF-β1) was tested by ELISA, expression of Smad3,Smad4 and Smad7 protein in the lung tissues were evaluated by RT-PCR. Results Compared with model group,the degree of alveolitis at the 7th day,14th day and the degree of fibrosis at the 14th day, 28th day and 45th day in Chinese medicine group decreased remarkably(P<0.05).TGF-β1 expression in Chinese medicine group was lower than that in model group at each time points. The expressions of Smad3 and Smad4 in Chinese medicine group decreased and Smad7 increased significantly(P<0.01). Conclusion Fuzheng Tixie Souluo formula not only can prevent the formation of alveolitis and fibrosis,but also delay the progress of pulmonary fibrosis induced by bleomycin over long period.The potential mechanisms may be related to the signal transduction of TGF-β1, attributed to the upregulation of the expression of Smad3 /Smad 4 and downregulation of the expression of Smad7.

    On current situation of TCM syndrome distribution of chronic atrophic gastritis

    Objective To summarize the current situation of studies on TCM syndrome distribution of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), so as to guide the normalization and standardization of TCM syndrome of CAG. Methods Searching literatures of studies on TCM syndrome of CAG in CNKI, CQVIP and Wangfang data up to Dec.31, 2013, altogether 31 literatures were eligible to be analyzed. Results In recent years, with more and more achievements have been made in epidemiological data, main symptoms, common syndrome types and the microcosmic syndrome differentiation correlation among different syndromes, it is indispensable for researchers to solve the problems such as non-uniform inclusive and exclusive criteria, fewer origins of case, smaller sample size, lack of experts investigation and the simple method applied to data mining. Conclusion It is essential to carry out the studies with multicenter, large sample and large projects, furthermore, uniform diagnostic standard put forward together by authoritative associations is the key to standardization of TCM syndrome of CAG.

    Meta-analysis of clinical effect of Banxia Xiexin decoction on patients with chronic atrophic gastritis

    Objective To evaluate the effect of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) treated with Banxia Xiexin decoction (BXD). Methods After searching randomized clinical trials (RCT)of treating CAG with Banxia Xiexin decoction with adopting strategy for literature search in CBM,CNKI and Wanfang database (excluding blinding), two reviewers independently screened titles/abstracts and full text reports of potentially eligible trials three times to identify studies for inclusion based on exclusive and inclusive criterion. Analytic studies which had reported relative risk (RR) , 95% confidence interval(CI), or required data to calculate them were included. Fixed effects model or random effects model was applied by heterogeneity between the studies. Results Nine RCTs with 594 cases were included. There was statistically significant between two groups(BXD group and control group) on clinical efficacy rate [RR=1.24,95%CI(1.07,1.45),P=0.004] , clinical curative rate [RR=1.67, 95%CI(1.13,2.49),P=0.01] , gastroscopy efficacy rate [RR=1.42,95%CI:(1.12,1.79), P=0.004] and gastroscopy curative rate [RR=1.96,95%CI:(1.34,2.86),P=0.000 6].There was no significant difference between two groups in Helicobacter Pylori eradication [RR=1.05,95%CI:(0.74,1.49), P=0.79] or intestinal metaplasia improvement [RR=1.23,95%CI:(0.96,1.58), P=0.10]. Conclusion Banxia Xiexin decoction had a significant effect on clinical and gastroscopy compared with control group . While further randomized trials with high-quality and low-risked bias are required.

    Correlation between serum cell adhesion molecules and TCM syndromes in patients with dyslipidemia

    Objective To explore the influence of dyslipidemia on serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(sICAM-1) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), and the relationship between TCM syndromes and serum lipemia, cell adhesion molecules. Methods TCM syndromes of 120 patients with dyslipidemia were determined, and whose serum TC,TG, HDL-C, sICAM-1and sVCAM-1 were test, compared with those of 20 healthy persons (normal group). Results The distribution of TCM syndromes of patients was as the following: liver-kidney yin deficiency(n=49), yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity (n=31), phlegm turbidity obstruction(n=25), spleen-kidney yang deficiency (n=10), qi stagnation and blood stasis(n=5). Furthermore, serum cell adhesion molecules in patients was significantly higher than normal group (P<0.05). Compared with liver-kidney yin deficiency group and yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity grouop, TC increased significantly in qi stagnation and blood stasis group; while TG in qi stagnation and blood stasis group increased compared with phlegm turbidity obstruction group (P<0.05). Conclusion The syndrome of liver-kidney yin deficiency, yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity and phlegm turbidity obstruction are main TCM syndromes. TC level can be used to be one of diagnose references in pattern of qi stagnation and blood stasis. And the levels of sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1 increase in patients with dyslipidemia.

    TCM syndrome distribution in 302 patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    Objective To study the distribution of TCM syndromes of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), so as to provide reference for clinical therapy. Methods After searching literatures of TCM syndromes of AECOPD in CNKI from the year 1997 to 2012, TCM syndrome Scale composed of TCM symptoms was established. 302 patients with AECOPD were inquired according to the listed symptoms on the TCM syndrome Scale. All the symptoms arisen from the survey were analyzed by cluster analysis and principal component analysis. Results AECOPD consists of four TCM syndromes:phlegm-heat obstructing lung with lung qi ascending counterflow, qi deficiency of lung-kidney with exogenous pathogenic factors, qi deficiency of lung- spleen with turbid phlegm obstructing lung, qi deficiency of spleen-kidney with qi stagnation and blood stasis. Conclusion Application of cluster analysis and principal component analysis to TCM syndrome of AECOPD is valuable for standardization and normalization of syndrome classification.

    Risk factors and TCM syndrome elements:a comparison of stroke patients with / without extracranial artery stenosis

    Objective To provide the evidence for prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases by studying the correlation between extracranial artery stenosis (EAS)and the risk factors of the stroke. Methods 1 784 patients who had history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) were divided into EAS group(n=259) and non-EAS group (n=1 525), and risk factors of stroke, TCM symptoms, tongue manifestation and pulse palpation were observed. Results The proportions of patients having history of TIA, taking little physical exercise and light physical labor in non-EAS group were higher than those in EAS group; the proportions of patients having history of stroke, suffered by high fasting blood-glucose concentration, and using tobacco in EAS group were higher than those in non-EAS group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). There was no significant difference in TCM syndrome elements between the two groups (P>0.05),however, incidence of single TCM symptoms, such as dark purple lips, physically clumsy and urine clear in large amounts showed significant difference in both groups. Conclusion EAS has high correlation with stroke, high fasting blood-glucose concentration. The major syndrome elements of stroke with TIA are fire, qi deficiency, yin deficiency, blood stasis, phlegm, yang deficiency. EAS has no effects on the types and distribution of TCM syndrome elements.

    Clinical observation of replenishing qi and nourishing yin formula reversing multidrug resistance of patients with refractory acute leukemia

    Objective To observe the effect of replenishing qi and nourishing yin formula on reversing the multidrug resistance and the bone marrow cell cycle of patients with refractory acute leukemia(RAL). Methods Altogether 60 RAL patients were randomly divided into control group and treatment group (n=30 each). Control group was treated with conventional chemotherapy only, and treatment group was treated with conventional chemotherapy combined with replenishing qi and nourishing yin formula for 30 d. Peripheral hemogram, the bone marrow remission rate, the bone marrow cell cycle rate, TCM syndrome score and side effects were calculated before and after the treatment in both groups. Results After treatment, proportion of primitive bone marrow cells (original cells and juvenile cells) and white blood cell count decreased significantly compared with before treatment in both groups (P<0.05), and those of the treatment group decreased dramatically compared with control group (P<0.05). Bone marrow remission rate in treatment group with 60.00% (18/30) increased significantly compared with control group with 30.00% (9/30) (P<0.05). After treatment, the ratio of bone marrow cells in G0 /G1 phase was lower and the ratio of cells in S phase and G2/M phase was higher than control group (P<0.05). TCM syndrome score in treatment group decreased compared with treatment group (P<0.05). During the whole period treatment, the side-effects of myelosuppression, alopecia and gastrointestinal reactions appeared frequently, and the incidence in treatment group was lower than those in control group. Conclusion Replenishing qi and nourishing yin formula combined with conventional chemotherapy acquired better effectiveness with fewer side-effects, attributed to the inducing of leukemia cell into the cell cycle and increasing the chemosensitivity.
