    Improving consciousness of life aesthetic education to optimize medical ethics

    Life aesthetic education integrates aesthetics and education, runs through all kinds of human education, and involves the whole process of life. It aims at how people live to reflect the nature of life, maintain life energy and stimulate the strength of life, endow the limited life with unlimited vitality, and create the value of truth, goodness and beauty of life. This paper expounds the characteristics of life aesthetic education, that is, rationality lying within sensibility. The coordination of the two brings vivid and flexible emotions, feelings and forms. The image and interest of life aesthetic education highlight its value orientation due to the return of image thinking. It proposes that the way of life aesthetic education should be followed to optimize and improve the medical ethics and style. Among them, narrative medicine should be vigorously promoted. It advocates to guide social groups to the future of truth, goodness and beauty with benevolence.

    Huangdi Neijing's theory on Shu and the treatment of Shu Pattern*

    The term of Shu (commonly known as summerheat) has multi-faceted connotationsin Huangdi Neijing(Huangdi's Internal Classic).Firstly, from the perspective of yin and yang, Shu is a both opposite and unified concept of cold; that is, Shu and cold are the criteria for the differentiation of yin and yang.Besides, warm, Shu, cool and cold correspond to the spring, summer, autumn and winter respectively.What's more, wind, Shu, dampness, dryness and cold correspond to the liver, heart, spleen, lung and kidney respectively in terms of the five organs, and wood, fire, earth, metal and water in terms of the five elements. In addition, in the three-yin three-yang theory, Shu corresponds to less yin, pertains to shaoyin, and is characterized by steaming. Based on these properties of Shu, correspondingly, disorders of Shu are mainly manifested as sadness.As a cause of disease, Shu is mainly “hidden beneath the skin and outside the stomach and intestines”, causing “profuse sweating with opening of the interstitial spaces”; or “metal (lung) disorder” according to the six-qi theory. The diversified discussion of the concept of Shu in Huangdi Neijing has caused conceptual confusion in later generations, mainly among the concepts of Shu, heat, fire and dampness. Shu and heat are two terms referring to the same concept, which are used alternately in Huangdi Neijing. Fire, as one of the five elements, corresponds to Shu. While Shu and dampness are two separate qi which can be seen together in historical periods and regional environment. In terms of treatment of Shu pattern in Huangdi Neijing, it's mainly through regulating the up-bearing and down-bearing of yin and yang, or by following the generating, restraining, counter-restraining, and transforming rules among the five elements. Such a therapeutic thinking pattern is inherited by Li Dongyuan in Qingshu Yiqi Decoction (Summerheat-resolving and Qi-boosting Decoction). In clinical application of the formula to treat most Shu patterns, modifications can be made in accordance to the patient's basic condition. Besides, the Qingshu Yiqi Decoction (Summerheat-resolving and Qi-boosting Decoction) established by Wang Mengying is based on the Baihu Jia Renshen Decoction (White Tiger Decoction Plus Ginseng) in Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage) for the treatment of fluid damage and qi consumption due to Shu.

    Analysis of theory of “the liver corresponding to spring”*

    Through the analysis of the current literature on the theory of “the liver corresponding to spring”, it is found that most of the studies are based on the time level of spring, summer, autumn and winter to study the characteristics of liver qi corresponding to spring. While the description of the circulation state of liver qi with different time nodes in spring is not enough, and the theory of “the liver corresponding to spring” needs to be deepened and refined. Based on literature research, this paper puts forward that the essence of the theory of “the liver corresponding to spring” is the correspondence between the liver qi and qi in spring. Specifically, the liver qi has detailed changes of being strong or weak, mellow and rising, and tendency of moving upward, downward, interior and exterior in spring. Under the guidance of the theory of “the liver corresponding to spring”, we should not only distinguish the strength of liver qi, recognize its direction and level, but also expand the guiding significance of the detailed characteristics of liver qi in the treatment of liver diseases. This in-depth study of the theory of “the liver corresponding to spring” could not only refine the understanding of the physiological characteristics of the liver qi that corresponds to the spring, but also make the clinical guidance of the theory more accurate and effective.

    Comparison of therapeutic effects of Xijiao Dihuang Decoction combined with Yinqiao Powder and its disassembled prescriptions on influenza pneumonia in mice*

    Objective To compare the therapeutic effects of Xijiao Dihuang Decoction combined with Yinqiao Powder and its disassembled prescription on influenza pneumonia in mice, and to explore the different effects of Xijiao Dihuang Decoction and Yinqiao Powder in the interruptive therapy. Methods ICR mice and BALB/c mice were randomly divided into the normal group, model group, Xijiao Dihuang Decoction combined with Yinqiao Powder (XDY) group, Xijiao Dihuang (XD) Decoction group, Yinqiao Powder (YQ) group, and Tamiflu group. The mice in all groups except the normal group were infected with influenza virus by nasal drops. Each group was administered with the corresponding decoction or solution 1 h after infection, once a day for 6 consecutive days. The ICR mice were observed for 14 days, and their weight and survival time were recorded. The BALB/c mice were sampled on the 2nd, 4th, and 6th days after infection, and lung tissue pathological sections were observed under the light microscope. The levels of IAV-NP mRNA in lung tissue were detected by RT-PCR, and the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in lung tissue were detected by ELISA. Results In the XDY group, improved survival rate, prolonged survival time and postponed extreme death period of infected mice were observed, and the effect was better than that of either the XD group or YQ group, with better effect in XD group than YQ group. The effect of the XDY group was better than that of either the XD group or YQ group in alleviating the inflammatory pathological changes of lung tissue infected mice on the 6th day, with the lesions of XD group less than those of YQ group. Compared with the model group, the expression of IAV-NP mRNA in the YQ group was down-regulated on the 2nd, 4th and 6th days (P<0.01), and the IAV-NP mRNA expression on the 4th and 6th days was lower than that in the XDY group (P<0.01), while there was no significant difference in the IAV-NP mRNA expression of XD group and the model group on the 4th and 6th days. The levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in lung tissues of the XDY, XD and YQ groups were lower than that of the model group on the 4th and 6th days (P<0.05,P<0.01), with the levels of the XDY group lower than that of either XD or YQ group (P<0.05,P<0.01).The level of TNF-α in XD group on the 6th day was lower than that in YQ group (P<0.05), while the level of IL-6 in XD group on the 2nd, 4th days was lower than that in YQ group (P<0.01). Conclusion With an antiviral effect of the Yinqiao Powder and anti-inflammatory effect of the Xijiao Dihuang Decoction, the combination of the two prescriptions seems to stop the pathogen in the early stage of viral infection, and reverse the severe inflammation in the extreme stage to achieve the therapeutic effect.

    Study on the inhibitory effect of resveratrol on injury of human umbilical vein endothelial cells*

    Objective To explore the effect and mechanism of resveratrol on human umbilical vein endothelial cells injury induced by glycosylated low density lipoprotein (Gly-LDL).Methods Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were cultured in vitro.The model group was induced by Gly-LDL.The low-concentration, medium-concentration and high-concentration RSV groups were established by treating with 5 μmol/L, 10 μmol/L and 20 μmol/L resveratrol respectively for 24 hours.The cell proliferative capacity was detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), the ability of cell migration was observed by scratch essay, the level of apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry, the contents of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in endothelial cells were detected by ELISA, and the protein expressions of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1α), IL-6 and TNF-α were detected by Western-blot.The mRNA expressions of TLR4, HIF-1 α, IL-6 and TNF-α were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR.Results Compared with the blank group, the cell proliferative capacity and migration ability decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01),the rate of apoptosis increased (P<0.01),the contents of IL-6 and TNF-α in serum increased (P<0.01),and the protein expression and mRNA expression of TLR4, HIF-1α, IL-6 and TNF-α in endothelial cells increased in the model group (P<0.05, P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the injury of human umbilical vein endothelial cells induced by Gly-LDL was alleviated after the intervention of resveratrol. The ability of cell proliferation and migration was enhanced (P<0.05), the apoptosis rate was decreased (P<0.05), the contents of serum IL-6 and TNF-α were decreased (P<0.05), and the protein expression and mRNA expression of TLR4, HIF-1α, IL-6 and TNF-α in endothelial cells were decreased in the medium-concentration and high-concentration RSV groups(P<0.05).Conclusion Resveratrol seems to reduce the inflammatory injury of human umbilical vein endothelial cells induced by Gly-LDL, enhance the ability of cell proliferation and migration, and inhibit cellapoptosis, which may be related to the down-regulation of TLR4/HIF-1α signal pathway by resveratrol.

    Effect of glycyrrhizic acid on the activation and extracellular matrix secretion in renal interstitial fibroblast cells induced by transforming growth factor β1*

    Objective To investigate the effect of glycyrrhizic acid (GA) on the expression of fibrosis-related factors in the renal interstitial fibroblastcells (NRK49F) of rats induced by transforming growth factor β1(TGF-β1).Methods NRK-49F cells were cultured in vitro.After 48 h of intervention with different concentrations of GA,Cell Counting Kit-8 was used to detect their effect on cell proliferation, so as to determine the concentration with no obvious effect on cell viability.The model was established by stimulating NRK-49F cells with 10 μg/L TGF-β1. Then different concentrations of GA were used for intervention. The expression of α-SMA and type 1 collagen (COL1) was detected with immunofluorescence method. The mRNA and protein expression of fibrosis-related factors of α-SMA,COL1, COL3 was detected with RT-PCR and WB methods, so as to evaluate the effect of GA on the activation of fibroblasts and the secretion of extracellular matrix.Results CCK-8 results showed that within the concentration range of 100~600 μmol/L, GA had no effect on the activity of NRK-49F cells.According to immunofluorescence results, the addition of GA intervention inhibited the expression of α-SMA and the secretion of COL1, with the increase of GA concentration,the inhibitory effect being enhanced. According to Western Blot results, GA intervention could down-regulate the expression of α-SMA, COL1 and COL3 compared with the model group; the expression level of COL1 protein in the GA 150 μmol/L group was reduced (P<0.01), and the level of COL1 and COL3 in the GA 200 μmol/L group was reduced (P<0.01). RT-PCR results showed that GA intervention could down-regulate the expression of α-SMA, COL1 and COL3 compared with the model group; among them, the mRNA expression level of COL1 in the GA 150 μmol/L group was reduced (P<0.01), and the expression of COL1 and COL3 in the GA 200 μmol/L group was reduced (P<0.01).Conclusion GA seems to inhibit the mRNA and protein expression of α-SMA, COL1 and COL3 in NRK-49F cells induced by TGF-β1, but its mechanism still needs to be further explored.

    Changes of appetite regulating factors in hypothalamus of rats with chronic mild unpredictable stress and the effect of Xiaoyao San on it*

    Objective To investigate the changes of appetite regulating factors and their receptors in hypothalamus of rats with chronic mild unpredictable stress depression, and explore the antidepressant mechanism of Xiaoyao San. Methods The depression rat model was established with stimulation of chronic unpredictable mild stress factors, and they were randomly divided into the model group, Xiaoyao San group and fluoxetine group (n=10), with 10 normal rats as the normal group. After the intervention of Xiaoyao San for 4 weeks, the behavior of the model rats was verified by Sugar Water Consumption Test and Feeding Behavior Test. The changes of Orexin A, Orexin B, Orexin R1, Orexin R2, leptin and leptin receptor (LEPR) were detected by immunohistochemistry. Results Compared with the normal group, 1% sucrose water consumption, sugar water consumption rate, body weight and food intake in the model group were decreased (P<0.01), and the latency of approach to food was prolonged (P<0.05). In hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC), the expression of Orexin A increased(P<0.01), while the expression of Orexin B and leptin decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the model group compared with the normal group. In Paraventricular Hypothalamic Nucleus (PVN), the expression of Orexin A increased(P<0.01), while the expression of Orexin R1 and Orexin R2 decreased(P<0.05), and the expression of leptin and its receptor LEPR decreased(P<0.05, P<0.01) in the model group compared with the normal group. Xiaoyao San showed an up-regulation effect on sugar consumption, body weight, and food intake in depression model rats (P<0.05), and also had a regulatory effect on the latency of approach to food and the expression of Orexin A, Orexin R1 and leptin in hypothalamus (P<0.05, P<0.01). Fluoxetine increased the expression of Orexin B and Orexin R2 (P<0.05, P<0.01). Conclusion Xiaoyao San seems to have an antidepressant effect by regulating the levels of Orexins and leptin in the central nervous system, and appetite regulating factors may be one of its main targets for antidepressant.

    Effect of HaizaoYuhu Decoction and its recipe removing antagonistic medicinal combination on mTOR-P70S6K/4E-BP1 signal pathway in rats with goiter*

    Objective To compare the effect of Haizao Yuhu Decoction and its recipe minus Sargassum and/or Glycyrrhiza on mTOR-p70S6K/4E-BP1 signaling pathway in rats with goiter. Methods Eighty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into blank group, model group, euthyrox group (0.02 μg/g), Haizao Yuhu Decoction group (10.08 g/kg),Haizao Yuhu Decoction minus Sargassum group (9.00 g/kg), Haizao Yuhu Decoction minus Glycyrrhiza group(9.18 g/kg), and Haizao Yuhu Decoction minus Sargassum and Glycyrrhiza group (8.10 g/kg).The rat model of goiter was induced with propylthiouracil. Each group was fed with the corresponding drug or decoction.The thyroid coefficient of each group was calculated. Under light microscope, pathological changes of thyroid tissue in rats were observed. The mRNA expressions of mTOR, p70S6K and 4E-BP1 in thyroid tissues were detected by RT-PCR. Results Compared with the blank group, the thyroid coefficient and the number of thyroid nuclei in the model group were increased (P<0.01), and the area of follicular cavity was decreased (P<0.01).Compared with the model group, the thyroid coefficient and the number of nuclei were decreased (P<0.01),while the area of follicular cavity was increased (P<0.01) in the Haizao Yuhu Decoction group and the three groups with its recipe minus Sargassum and/or Glycyrrhiza. Among those four groups,the Haizao Yuhu Decoction group showed the most obvious recovery effect. Compared with the blank group, the mRNA expression of mTOR, p70S6K and 4E-BP1 in the control group was increased (P<0.01). Compared with the model group,the mRNA expression levels of mTOR, p70S6K and 4E-BP1 were all decreased in the Haizao Yuhu Decoction group and the three groups with its recipe minus Sargassum and/or Glycyrrhiza. (P<0.01). Conclusion Haizao Yuhu Decoction and its recipe minus Sargassum and/or Glycyrrhiza seem to correct the thyroid coefficient and improve the pathological morphology of thyroid tissue in rats with goiter.The mechanism may be related to the inhibition of cell proliferation by inhibiting the mTOR-P70S6K/4E-BP1 signaling pathway.

    Effects and efficacy of Compound Chaijin Jieyu Formula on the expression of CaMKⅡ and CREB in hypothalamus and hippocampus of rats with depression and insomnia*

    Objective To observe the effect of Compound Chaijin Jieyu(Bupleurum & Turmeric Root Tuber Depression-Relieving) Formula (CCJJYF) on the expression of Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase Ⅱ (CaMKⅡ) and cAMP-response-element-binding protein (CREB) in hypothalamus and hippocampus of rats with depression and insomnia, and to explore the mechanism of CCJJYF in relieving depression and insomnia. Methods 72 SD rats were randomly divided into normal group, model group,venlafaxine (13.5 μg/g)+diazepam (0.9 μg/g) group, high-dose (10.8 g/kg) CCJJYF group, mid-dose (5.4 g/kg) CCJJYF group and low-dose (2.7 g/kg) CCJJYF group (n=12). Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) combined with sleep deprivation was used to establish rat models of depression and insomnia. After 35 days of modeling and drug intervention, forced swim test (FST) and pentobarbital sodium test were used to detect depression and insomnia-like behaviors in rats. HE staining was used to detect the pathological changes in hypothalamus and hippocampus. The levels of CRH, ACTH and CORT in serum and hypothalamus were detected by ELISA. In addition, the levels of NE, 5-HT and DA in hypothalamus and hippocampus were detected by HPLC-ECD. Western blot and RT-qPCR were used to detect the protein level of CaMKⅡ and CREB and their gene expression in the hypothalamus and hippocampus. Results Compared with the normal group, the immobility time of rats in the model group was increased in the FST (P<0.01); besides, their sleep latency was prolonged, and their sleep duration was shortened (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the immobility time in the mid-dose CCJJYF group was reduced in FST (P<0.01), their sleep latency was shortened, and their sleep duration increased (P<0.05). After the intervention of venlafaxine+diazepam and CCJJYF, the gap between hypothalamic and hippocampal neurons was reduced, the incidence of arrangement disorder and cell vacuoles was reduced.The levels of CRH, ACTH and CORT in serum and hypothalamus in the high-dose and mid-dose CCJJYF groups were reduced (P<0.01). The levels of NE, 5-HT and DA in the hypothalamus and hippocampus in the venlafaxine+diazepam group and the high-dose and mid-dose CCJJYF groups were increased (P<0.01). CaMKⅡ and CREB proteins and their gene expression in the hypothalamus and hippocampus in the venlafaxine+diazepam group and the mid-dose CCJJYF group increased (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Conclusion CCJJYF seems to alleviate depression-like behaviors in rats with depression and insomnia and improve their sleep quality. The mechanism may be related to reducing excessive secretion of HPA axis, stabilizing the expression of monoamine neurotransmitters and up-regulating CaMKⅡ and CREB protein and their gene expression.

    Specificity of imaginary working training on sleep quality of college students with introverted and extroverted personalities based on change of Beta-band electroencephalogram*

    Objective To compare Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and β-band EEG power changes of the college students who received and did not receive imaginary working training, and to explore the specificity of imaginary working on the sleep quality regulation of the introverted and extroverted personalities. Methods College students were randomly divided into experimental group and control group according to the introverted and extroverted dimension by the ratio of 1∶1. The experimental group received the intervention of imaginary working, while the control group did not receive any intervention. Both groups were intervened by three imaginary themes, and the data of Pittsburgh sleep quality index and β-band EEG absolute power were collected and compared between the two groups. Results After intervention, the Pittsburgh sleep quality index was improved. There was statistic difference between the introverted experimental group and the control group (P<0.05), but there was no statistic difference between the extroverted experimental group and the control group. In terms of the β-band absolute power change, there was statistic difference in FC4, C3, CP3, P3 leads between the introverted experimental group and the control group (P<0.05), and there was statistic difference in T4 and O1 leads (P<0.01); besides there were statistic differences in F8, FT8 and C4 leads between the extroverted experimental group and the control group(P<0.05), and statistic differences in FCZ lead(P<0.01). Conclusion Imaginary working could possibly improve the sleep quality of people with extroverted personality, and the training of imaginary working could improve the sleep quality of those with introverted personality.

    Effect of five tuina manipulations on blood coagulation and fibrinolysis in rats with deep vein thrombosis*

    Objective To explore the safe application of the tuina techniques through studying the effects of five tuina manipulations on the coagulation and fibrinolysis functions of deep vein thrombosis model rats. Methods Seventy-two male SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=12): the model group, pointing manipulation group, plucking manipulation group, kneading manipulation group, pushing manipulation group and pulling manipulation group. Deep vein thrombosis models were established by incomplete ligation. Tuina manipulation intervention was applied on the second day after modeling (1 time/day). The pointing, plucking, kneading and pushing groups were applied manipulations qualitatively by the tuina manipulation simulator, and the rats of pulling group were intervened by the pulling manipulation simulator. The materials were collected on day 3 and day 10 after the intervention respectively. Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT) and fibrinogen (FIB) were detected by the automatic coagulation analyzer. D-dimer, thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and 6-ketoprostaglandin F1α (6-Keto-PGF1α) were detected by ELISA. Results After 3 days of intervention, the APTT of the kneading manipulation group was shorter than that of the model group (P<0.05); after 10 days of intervention, the APTT of the plucking group was shorter than that of the model group (P<0.01). No statistic difference in TT and FIB was observed between the model group and other groups. After 3 days of intervention, the D-dimer content of the plucking group was higher than that of the model group (P<0.05); while in terms of 6-Keto-PGF1α, the content of plucking and pushing group was higher than that of the model group (P<0.05), and the content of the pulling group was higher than that of the model group (P<0.01). After 10 days of intervention, the TXB2 content of the pointing group was higher than that of the model group (P<0.05); while in terms of 6-Keto-PGF1α, the content of the pointing, pushing and pulling groups was lower than that of the model group (P<0.01), and the content of the kneading group was lower than that of the model group (P<0.05). Conclusion The pointing, pushing and pulling methods are probably safe, while the plucking and kneading methods might be of certain risks in deep vein thrombosis rats judging from the perspective of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis.

    Effect of acupuncture in treating postprandial distress syndrome with spleen-stomach qi deficiency*

    Objective To observe the clinical effect of acupuncture on postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) with spleen-stomach qi deficiency. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted in 108 eligible PDS patients, with 55 cases in the acupuncture group and 53 cases in the sham acupuncture group. The patients in the acupuncture group were treated by acupuncture at Baihui (DU20), Danzhong (RN17), Zhongwan (RN12), Qihai (RN6), Tianshu(ST25), Neiguan(PC6), Zusanli(ST36), Gongsun(SP4) and Taibai(SP3). A superficial skin penetration at non-acupoints was performed in the sham acupuncture group. The patients in both groups were treated for 3 sessions (20 minutes per session) per week for 4 weeks, and were followed up 12 weeks after the last session. The changes of Symptom Index of Dyspepsia (SID), Nepean dyspepsia index(NDI) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS) scores were compared between the two groups after the last session and 12 weeks after the treatment, so as to evaluate the efficacy and safety. Results After 4 weeks of treatment, the effective rate of the acupuncture group was 72.7%, higher than 45.3% of the sham acupuncture group (P<0.05), and the descender of SID and NDI scores of the acupuncture group were greater than those of the sham acupuncture group (P<0.05) and lasted for 12 weeks after treatment (P<0.05). After 4 weeks of treatment, the descender of HADS score in the acupuncture group was greater than that of the sham group (P< 0.05), but there was no significant difference between the two groups during follow-up period. No serious adverse events were reported during the study period. Conclusion Among PDS patients with spleen-stomach qi deficiency, acupuncture could reduce the symptoms of indigestion, improve the quality of life, with sustained efficacy over 12 weeks in patients who have received acupuncture treatment for 4 weeks, three times each week. Acupuncture seems to alleviate the patient's anxious and depressive emotions, but this effect does persist when the treatment ends.

    A case-control study on the correlation between TCM treatment and onset of diabetic retinopathy*

    Objective To evaluate the correlation between TCM treatment and the onset of diabetic retinopathy with a case-control study,and to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of the disease.Methods Participants were collected from four hospitals in Beijing.Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with diabetic retinopathy were selected as the case group, and patients with type 2 diabetes without diabetic retinopathy were selected as the control group.The cases and controls were matched by age and sex at a ratio of 1 to 4. Self-designed questionnaires were used to collect data by one-to-one survey, and the data were recorded by EpiData 3.1 software. The conditional logistic regression method was used to analyze the correlation between TCM(to treat diabetes or related complications) and the onset of diabetic retinopathy by SPSS 22.0 software.Results 72 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with diabetic retinopathy were included as the case group, and 236 patients with type 2 diabetes were included in the control group. There were 36 males and 36 females in the case group, with an average age of (62.3±10.0) years and a disease course of [13(6,19)] years.Meanwhile,the control group consisted of 112 males and 124 females, with an average age of (61.5±9.6) years and a disease course of [10(5,15)] years.Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that the proportion of patients receiving previous TCM treatment was 52.8% and 33.5% respectively in the case group and control group, with statistically significant differences (OR 2.505, 95% CI:1.412 to 4.443). After adjusting the course of disease, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that there was a statistically significant difference between case group and control group in the proportion of patients who had received previous TCM treatment (OR 2.296, 95% CI:1.269 to 4.156).Conclusion There seems to be a correlation between TCM treatment and the onset of diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes patients. The patients with diabetic retinopathy has a higher proportion in previous TCM treatment, and an average longer duration of TCM treatment too.Given the limitations of case-control studies, this conclusion needs to be confirmed by further prospective study Results .
